Chapter Nine
Meri
âThis room is to die for, Noel! I love the slanted ceiling! Itâs so cozy! Yet itâs a large room, look at all the space! And I love how the bed sits right under the window. In the summertime, I bet you can lay in bed and look up at the stars.â
âItâs comfy, isnât it?â His words are understated but he beams at me with pleasure. âI thought you might like this room so I asked Alfred to make it up specially for you. The woodstove works! See?â
âItâs adorable! I didnât even know they made them that small.â
He opens the door on the tiny, pot-bellied woodstove tucked under the slanted ceiling in a corner.
Inside the wee stove thereâs a pile of kindling and some very small logs, all ready to be set alight. âWould you like me to start it for you? Itâs so small, it heats up in minutes. And it will warm the room up nicely for when youâre ready for bed.â
âIâd love that! Thank you so much.â
âMy pleasure.â Taking a disposable butane lighter from shelf nearby, Noel kneels in front of the little stove and sets the kindling inside alight.
I sit on the four-poster bed, with its gauzy curtains draped like bunting, and watch while he gently blows on the flames, mesmerized by the play of the muscles in his broad back, clearly visible under his shirt.
I wonder what it would feel like being cradled in those arms.
Bliss, I betcha! Bliss.
âThere,â he says, after a few minutes. He sits back on his heels and closes the cute little door on the stove, then adjusts the flue.
âNot all the rooms have an ensuite bathroom and a wood stove. This oneâs for special guests.â He winks, then rubs the back of his head. âUgh. I need to go shower. Iâll leave you to yourself now. Afterwards, please come downstairs and join me in the kitchen. Alfred will have more substantial food for us than cookies. Although, his ginger cookies are the best Iâve ever had, soâ¦be warned. Theyâre like crack.â
He stands and looks down at me, his eyes so warm and intense it gives me that feeling of giddy familiarity againâ¦but this time, I canât keep quiet.
âNoel, why are you being so good to me? Weâre strangers, we only just met. You donât have to do any of this.â
He steps towards me, takes my chin in his hand and tilts my head up. âI donât exactly know, Meri.â His voice is quiet. âIâm just following my heart. And I hope youâre doing the same.â
Then he leans down and places his lips on mine, with such sweet, loving tenderness it almost breaks my heart.
âMmmm, oh my gosh,â I breathe when he finally breaks the kiss and stands back up. He steps away from me and unselfconsciously adjusts the suddenly very large bulge at his crotch.
âI know, right,â he says. âEr, sorry! But that was fuckinâ yummy!â His smile, his bulge and the look in his eyes tells me heâs not lying.
